amish boy aka sküge (not to be confused with skudge) is hugues croibien, a thirty seven year old belgian who has experimented with electronic music since his teens. with a diet of seal phüric, the prodigy, autechre and unit moebius stoking his primordial fire, croibien began to align with the rage that exists in the breakcore genre. already an addict of reggae and dub at this time, croibien decided to create some cut-up raggacore with his brand new ableton live 3 software. meanwhile with friends, croibien created break n brol, a non-lucrative association which tried to promote alternative electronic music in liège where he lived. they premiered some bassline stars kanji kinetic and -squire of gothos- on the belgian scene, alongside other alternative electronic composers and musicians like subjex, ebola, mustard gunn and herrmutt lobby. the fellowship decided to create a free net label to release compilations with the bnb party artists. the rough style techno resurgence over the last few years has precipitated a metamorphosis, sküge became amish boy more glitchy than techno, more offbeat than acid and more ambivalent than industrial. although heavily invested for two decades now, laika test project on power vacuum will be croibiens first vinyl release, with a follow-up already in the pipeline.

acid test continues their journey with the return of achterbahn damour. on their first proper release in three years, jool & iron curtis patiently craft an intricate sound world - with the opening track, major-key pads hearken towards a bright future, hi-hats rustle like leaves and on dehaveland, percussive elements fall into beautiful, random unison like factory machines staging an after hours dance. samuel van dijks vaunted vc-118a project steps up for a remix, turning in a taut techno version that unfurls smoke pillars of ghostly ambience. the duo wraps up the four-tracker with an unexpected dreamy electro turn, dont talk to me. throughout acid test 13, they remain in lockstep with the labels ethos - to bend, hammer and flatten acid lines into new, imaginative shapes

the trickfinger project was recorded 10 years ago with no intention of being released at the time, made purely for discovery and learning experience. in my opinion, making music with no intention of releasing it is the best thing a musician can do for his own development in this day and age. the trickfinger lp was made in that mindset, and it was the beginning of a new musical life for me. when i hear it, it sounds like i am opening up doorways to new worlds, and i never have had that feeling listening to music i made for the purpose of releasing it and selling it.

“mirror test” conjures that rare mood between darkness and elation, contemplation and celebration, and drives it home with an infectious, jacking rhythm section which recalls the late-80s ny club music of boyd jarvis and paul simpson, and labels like easy street and fourth floor, but imbues the sound with a toughness and precision only possible today. analog synth figures, glassy and angular, ricochet around the track, trading jabs with funky snare work and robotic, stabby chord patterns to create a hook-laden machine groove which demands repeated listening.
the record’s b-side feature, “replace yourself,” is the subtler, dreamier, more futuristic of the two. unmistakably urban with its swinging, bottom-heavy groove and strange, architectural chord work, it seduces and transports. “replace yourself” dares you to do exactly that.

after a first collaboration focusing on the city of angels, la legend john tejada and acid innovator tin man (johannes auvinen), this time brooding on the latters home city, and formers birthplace, vienna. the austrian capital is known as the city of music and the city of dreams, two broadly aligning concepts that go far in describing this beguiling 12-inch. the four songs were mixed down live to 2 tracks, created in the real world without a daw, or multi tracking, which has really captured the spirit of performance and improvisation. succeeding railjet, a tense drum workout, comes bim, referring to the colorful trams that run through vienna. here, auvinen sculpts his 303 into near-pizzicato form. the acid box is accompanied by stately pads making for one of the duo’s most memorable tracks yet. the next cut, danube nights, references the mighty, ancient river, the flow motion mirrored by a couple of widescreen acid lines. a pensive lead and some melancholy chords emerge, but the drums roll right along like the water- tough enough for a heaving floor with a hint of fragility for the headphones. the record concludes with the acidic prater allee, named after idyllic, sprawling park on the banks of the danube. the duos love letter to vienna is well-suited for travel, for the dance and for dreaming.

arnold jarvis take some time out was first released in 1987, the year that fourth floor records was born, and it stands the test of time as a seminal release for the label. the track perfectly characterises the stand out productions that keep the house music world returning again and again to its catalogue for inspiration. this official vinyl re-issue includes the club and dub that made up the original release, plus a reconstruction mix by ilija rudman. ilija delighted classic music company earlier this year with his minimal take on disco in track in her eyes. his approach to the take some time out re-work has the same deconstructed vibe the loose percussion and punchy melodic bass gives a pleasing spaciousness to the track, giving the record fresh life and re-imagining it for 2016
